I
have enjoyed drawing and painting since I was very young. I was born in New
Westminster in 1953, received a Bachelor of Fine Art degree from the
University of British Columbia in 1975 and had my first one-man show in
Vancouver in 1978. I
work from my own photographs, using an airbrush to apply oil paints to
canvas. Rather than copy the photograph, I try to render the scene as it
impressed me at the time I experienced it and as I remember it. My paintings
grow out of an inherent curiosity for life so I may not be able to define
exactly why I select a particular image to paint; but as I work through a
piece I begin to understand how it is meaningful to me. I like to keep this
aspect of my work unencumbered by formality, painting whatever most inspires
my enthusiasm. As a
Modern Realist I have, over time, developed a technique that is unique and
unmistakably identifiable. By airbrushing oil paints over a white titanium
ground I am able to achieve a smooth surface, brilliant transparent colour
and a soft-edge style of realism that conveys a deep sense of space and
light. I use skills acquired through life-drawing, traditional watercolour
painting, photography and thirty years of airbrushing to produce my work. I
believe “Art” as meaningful experience exists in everyone’s life. Artists are
those of us who hope to identify and communicate that experience through the
objects we create.
